Booklet Paper Stock Guide
Select the perfect stock and weight to match the tactile feel, durability, and appearance your brand requires.
60 lb. Uncoated Text
A lightweight, non-reflective paper with a natural texture. Best for booklets meant to be written in, as uncoated paper absorbs ink cleanly without smudging.
- Feel & Appearance: Smooth, matte, non-glare, resembles high-grade writing paper.
- Recommended For: Instruction manuals, student workbooks, coloring books, and internal documents.
- Best Bindings: Saddle Stitch, Loop Stitch, Perfect Bound, Wire-O, Plastic Coil.
80 lb. & 100 lb. Gloss Text
A polished, reflective paper stock that makes colors pop and images appear sharp and vibrant. Available in standard 80 lb. and premium heavy 100 lb. weights.
- Feel & Appearance: High-shine, smooth coated surface, rich contrast, and commercial feel.
- Recommended For: Photo-heavy catalogs, brochures, event programs, and standard marketing magazines.
- Best Bindings: Saddle Stitch, Loop Stitch, Perfect Bound, Wire-O, Plastic Coil.
80 lb. & 100 lb. Matte Text
An elegant, low-glare paper with a smooth satin coating. It offers high readability for text while maintaining a premium feel. Available in standard 80 lb. and premium heavy 100 lb. weights.
- Feel & Appearance: Dull-coated satin finish, glare-free, fingerprint resistant, premium tactile look.
- Recommended For: Text-heavy catalogs, corporate magazines, school books, and annual reports.
- Best Bindings: Saddle Stitch, Loop Stitch, Perfect Bound, Wire-O, Plastic Coil.
Paper Weights & Configurations Explained
When printing booklets, paper stocks are split into two categories: Text Weight (thinner paper used for inside pages) and Cover Weight (stiffer card stock used for the outer cover).
"Plus Cover" Configuration: This is our most popular choice, pairing a heavy, durable cover stock (like 80 lb. or 100 lb. Cover) with lighter text weight inside pages. This protects the booklet and gives it a highly professional finish.
"Self-Cover" Configuration: This means the same paper stock is used for both the cover and the inside pages (for example, a 16-page brochure printed entirely on 100 lb. Gloss Text). It is a cost-effective option best suited for magazines and brochures.
Choose a cover lamination (Gloss or Matte) to protect your booklet from scratching, fingerprints, and tearing during transit and distribution.
| Paper Stock | Weight Class | GSM Equivalent | Finish | Used For | Tactile Quality & Density | Best Industries |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 lb. Uncoated | Text | ~90 gsm | Uncoated / Smooth | Interior pages | Lightweight, easy to write on with pen or pencil | Education, Healthcare, Manufacturing |
| 80 lb. Gloss | Text | ~118 gsm | Glossy / High-shine | Interior pages, Self-cover | Standard magazine thickness, vivid color rendition | Retail, Non-profits, Event Organizers |
| 80 lb. Matte | Text | ~118 gsm | Satin Matte / Low-glare | Interior pages, Self-cover | Standard magazine thickness, soft non-reflective finish | Retail, Non-profits, Event Organizers |
| 100 lb. Gloss | Text | ~148 gsm | Glossy / High-shine | Interior pages, Self-cover | Heavyweight text, opaque, rich contrast | Corporate, Real Estate, Automotive |
| 100 lb. Matte | Text | ~148 gsm | Satin Matte / Low-glare | Interior pages, Self-cover | Heavyweight text, opaque, premium tactile feel | Corporate, Real Estate, Automotive |
| 80 lb. Gloss | Cover | ~216 gsm | Glossy / High-shine | Cover pages | Medium card stock, bends easily, durable cover | Marketing Agencies, Corporate Events |
| 80 lb. Matte | Cover | ~216 gsm | Satin Matte / Low-glare | Cover pages | Medium card stock, fingerprint-resistant, understated finish | Marketing Agencies, Corporate Events |
| 100 lb. Gloss | Cover | ~270 gsm | Glossy / High-shine | Cover pages | Thick, heavy card stock, premium book feel | High-End Brands, Lookbooks, Showrooms |
| 100 lb. Matte | Cover | ~270 gsm | Satin Matte / Low-glare | Cover pages | Thick, heavy card stock, sophisticated non-glare finish | High-End Brands, Lookbooks, Showrooms |
Note: "lb." weight is measured differently for Text and Cover stock, so equal lb. numbers aren't equal thickness — 80 lb. Cover is noticeably heavier and stiffer than 80 lb. Text. GSM (grams per square meter) is shown above for an apples-to-apples comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about booklet binding.
Saddle Stitch uses staples through the fold and is best for booklets up to 64 pages. It's fast, affordable, and lays flat when open. Perfect Bound uses a glued spine with a printable cover, suitable for thicker books (28–96 pages). Perfect bound looks more premium and allows for spine text, but takes longer to produce.
We accept print-ready PDF files with:
- CMYK color mode (not RGB)
- 300 dpi resolution
- 3mm bleed on all sides for full-bleed designs
- All fonts embedded or converted to outlines
If you're unsure, our prepress team offers a free file check before production.

Spine printing is only available for Perfect Bound booklets. Whether it is possible depends entirely on the thickness of the spine, which is determined by your total page count and paper weight (usually requiring a minimum spine thickness of 0.125 inches or ~60–80 pages depending on stock).
Because of these variables, spine printing requires a custom quote. Please reach out to our team with your specifications, and we will verify if your book meets the thickness requirements.
Booklet printing costs depend on your binding type, page count, paper stock, and quantity. Saddle stitch is the most affordable option, while perfect bound costs more but offers a premium finish. Use our instant quote tool for exact pricing.
Catalogue printing costs vary based on size, page count, and binding. Perfect bound catalogues with higher page counts are ideal for product listings and annual reports. Get a custom quote in under 60 seconds.
The best binding depends on four key factors:
- Page count: Saddle Stitch and Loop Stitch work best under 64 pages. Perfect Bound and Wire-O handle higher volumes (up to 96 pages).
- How it will be used: For frequent desk reference or workbooks, choose a lay-flat binding like Wire-O or Plastic Coil. For one-time reads like event programs or brochures, Saddle Stitch is ideal.
- Budget: Stapled Documents and Saddle Stitch are the most cost-effective. Perfect Bound costs more but delivers a premium, bookstore-quality finish with a printable spine.
- Binder compatibility: Need to insert your booklets into ring binders? Loop Stitch is the only binding with wire loops designed specifically for that purpose.
All binding types share the same 4–5 business day turnaround.
Yes, if you choose Saddle Stitch or Loop Stitch binding. These booklets are constructed by folding large sheets of paper in half, which naturally creates 4 pages (front, back, left-inside, right-inside). If your document layout is not a multiple of 4, you must add blank pages to make up the difference.
For Perfect Bound, Wire-O, and Plastic Coil, your page count only needs to be a multiple of 2 (front and back of each leaf).
It depends on how the booklet will be handled and your budget:
- Self-Cover — The cover uses the same paper stock as the inside pages (e.g. 80 lb. Gloss Text throughout). Cost-effective and fast; ideal for newsletters, event programs, and short-run marketing pieces.
- Thicker Cover / Plus-Cover — The cover is printed on a heavier cardstock (e.g. 100 lb. Gloss Cover or Laminated Cover). Recommended for booklets that will be handled frequently, mailed, or need to last — such as product catalogs, presentation booklets, and company profiles.
Minimums vary by binding method:
- Saddle Stitch / Loop Stitch: Minimum 8 pages (including cover). Page count must be a multiple of 4.
- Perfect Bound: Minimum 28 pages, up to 96 pages.
- Wire-O / Plastic Coil: Minimum 8 pages. Page count only needs to be a multiple of 2.
- Stapled Documents: Minimum 2 pages with no specific multiple requirement.
If your page count doesn’t fit the required multiple, simply add blank pages to round up.
Portrait booklets are taller than they are wide — the standard orientation for catalogs, manuals, annual reports, and brochures.
Landscape booklets are wider than they are tall, making them ideal for photo lookbooks, architectural drawings, presentation slide decks, restaurant menus, and visual artist portfolios.
All our standard sizes (5.5" × 8.5", 6" × 9", 8.5" × 11", 9" × 12") are available in portrait orientation. Contact us for landscape sizing options.
Our standard online minimums are: 500 units for Saddle Stitch, Loop Stitch, Wire-O, and Plastic Coil; 250 units for Perfect Bound; and 3 units for Stapled Documents.
If you need a single copy as a prototype, a proof, or a one-off portfolio piece, please contact our team directly for a custom short-run quote.
Yes! If your booklet is a workbook, coloring book, scheduler, planner, or technical manual that requires writing with pens or pencils, we strongly recommend choosing 60 lb. Uncoated Text paper. It absorbs ink easily without smudging.
Gloss and Matte paper stocks have coating layers that make them smooth and vibrant, but writing on them with normal ballpoint pens or pencils is difficult and prone to smearing.
Yes! We run a free professional file check on every booklet order. Our prepress team reviews your artwork for bleed lines, resolution (300 dpi), color profile (CMYK), and safe zones. We then generate and email you a digital PDF proof for your final review and approval before sending your booklets to the production press.
Yes — our online configurator covers standard ranges (e.g. 28–96 for Perfect Bound, 8–100 for Wire-O/Plastic Coil), but higher page counts are available. Contact us for a custom quote.
